Celebrating a Century of Service

Overview

The Las Cruces Fire Department, a department deeply committed to customer service, is responsible for protecting life, property, and the environment from the hazards of fire, hazardous materials incidents, and for providing emergency medical service. The department serves a population of approximately 93,000.

The Fire Department is staffed by 123 sworn and 5 civilian employees, and organized into two divisions: Administration and Operations.

The Administration Division oversees Prevention Services, Emergency Medical Services, Training and provides for the overall management of the department.

Prevention Services is responsible for reviewing, updating, and enforcing fire-related codes and ordinances. Activities carried out by this division include code compliance inspections of all commercial occupancies, public education programs, and the investigation of fires to determine cause and origin.

Operations is responsible for responding to emergency incidents. These incidents include fires of all types, medical emergencies, and hazardous material incidents. To provide a timely response, seven fire stations are strategically located throughout Las Cruces. Each fire station houses an engine company and is staffed 24 hours per day. Additionally, Stations 1 and 4 house a ladder truck company. All uniformed personnel are licensed Emergency Medical Technician's. The fire department offers engine-based paramedic services on several of its apparatus.

The Operations Division staffs a Hazardous Materials Response Team which provides emergency response services to isolate, contain, identify, and mitigate unplanned and uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances within the greater Las Cruces area. Additionally, the division operates a Technical Rescue Team for providing high/low angle rescue, confined space, swift water and other specialized services to rescue trapped persons. LCFD also provides Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting services to the Las Cruces International Airport.

In 2008, the Las Cruces Fire Department responded to 14,177 emergency incidents. The majority of these calls, approximately 75%, were for emergency medical services.
